Ike

A long while back I posted a story about the flooding of my house during a tropical storm in this blog entry. This story took place just 10 miles north of Galveston. During the time of this event I was working in Galveston part time. Ike has brought all those nasty memories back again.

  1. oh, tabor, how strong you both were! what a chaotic time in your life. that canoe ride would have scared me badly!

it is so sad to read these kinds of stories, to imagine so many people going through so much tragic destruction and loss. many cannot afford to start over. it is heart-breaking to even imagine losing everything you have worked for in life. in the midst of it all the most important thing is our health, for sure, but our emotional health is certainly damaged in such crises. it is pretty remarkable how flexible and how sturdy we all turn out to be when it comes to survival, isn't it?

  2. Oh my!
You certainly must have had to take"one day at a time." Just reading your story of everything that you had to endure as a young mother with two young children has me wondering how seniors cope with a diasaster.
It must be twice as difficult for them.

  3. The story was harrowing indeed, Tabor, but for me the saddest part was how wonderful your home must have been before the storm - it sounds like a description of the perfect dream home that many of us carry in our imaginations!

The news today included warnings to those cleaning up in Galveston and Houston to wear gloves and watch out for snakes.... they didn't mention the floating balls of fire ants. Yikes.
