Lifting Fog

The best time of the day for me is when I get up around 6:00 AM. The house is very quiet since hubby sleeps in until 7:30 or 8:00.  The house is also still dark because it is winter.  I make my coffee and open blogs as the sun slowly climbs up into the cold sky. In winter I hear the geese flapping and honking their way out of my side of the river into their bigger world of abandoned corn fields or sometimes escaping the hunters when I hear the pop of guns on the other side of the field. Today, I saw them high above the fog over my house looking as if they were ghosts of geese heading out to some mystical retreat.  I hear the crows distant cawing ordering the rest of the birds around.

Yet, it is still relatively quiet here in my little corner of the world. I am surprised that I still need a little corner of time in retirement that I treasure. Time to be alone with my waking thoughts and time to write and create with my photography. Time to think about what lies ahead in my non-activity filled day.  Time to hear my breath.  Time to wait for the fog to lift.

  1. For me the 'my time' happens at night, very late at night, after beloved and I have said good night.
The only noise I hear is that of the owl in the horse chestnut tree and the answering hoot from across the valley, the gentle tinkling of the river finding its way over the stones or the low whoosh when it's in full spate. Perhaps a dog barks on a far away farm and, occasionally, there's a sudden murmur of the ducks by the bridge, if something has disturbed their sleep.

I think back over the day just gone, leaning on the window sill, letting the stillness of night work its magic.

  2. I think if I had your view, I might enjoy the early morning as well. My mom always got up early, and sat on our porch (nearly year round) with her coffee and the paper. She didn't have a good start to the day without that time to reflect and gather her thoughts.

  3. I too am surprised that, with all the day long in retirement, I treasure "my time". It can be either morning or night, but often morning.

The sky is just lightening to misty blue, and one of our cockerels is having a muffled crow in the darkeness of their chicken house.

I stretch beneath the warm duvet and relish the fact that I dont have to get up at any particular time. And plot and plan all the things I can do during the day - and smile and hope to make it a happy day.

  4. It took a long time for it to come - but most of time is my time.
I love the mornings and am usually awake at 5:00. My blinds are open and I can see lights in the distance and stars in the sky. I say some special prayers and I am up. As day breaks and I am in the kitchen, I can see daybreaking through the woods. In a short time the birds begin coming to my feeders Love it when I can have the door open and hear the sounds coming out of the woods.
Enough shared. Tabor, enjoy this time.

  5. A treasured hour and a half or more, I'm sure. :)
Sounds like you make good use of it.

  6. I sometimes need more than an hour...today two. Then again, I have a cold fogged brain today too.

He didn't "Let" you? That's pretty hard to do as it is the biggest thing on the island.

  7. Maggie all I got to see on that island was brush and dusty roads!...except for the harbor where we pulled in briefly.

  8. It's interesting to me that this kind of writing and photography is an expression of time to our selves, like tapping into our inner world. It's sustainable in the way that writing as a chore is not.

How to get a shot that feels warm and cold at the same time? You do know because this one feels sky and water and makes me wonder which it is.

I was transported there for a few seconds. My geese are wild turkeys.

  9. I really love the way you write Ms. Tabor! It has this certain something that glues readers until the very last sentence.

I think I know of this certain time you speak about. You know, 'Me' time, not worrying about anything else. At night, at around 12AM, I get some 'Me' time since everybody is asleep and I can do anything, like write blogs or read books. When I wake up at around 5AM too, it's the same thing!
