The Heat Is On

The tulip poplar trees
Over a hundred feet high
Have begun to throw off
Their golden leaves
Like slow chubby strippers
Resigned to this hot dance
That comes every July.

The sun's spotlight
Obscures their sheltered stage
Of cool green leaves

And dark green shadows
Blinding the eye

With hot light
And turning green to gray sage.

Even the dark coal crows
Sit high like black tree knots
With their mouths open
Panting for some
Relief from the hot
Golden agony
That is summer.

The bird bath is
The hot new spot.
Take a number
To shimmy on the dance floor.

And then later jitterbug
High in the poplar branches
Drops caught like confetti in the sun.

You also will dance
If you forget that, for you,
Shoes are required
At this annual gala
Unless your feet laugh
And can jitterbug over hot tar
On the pavement.

  1. Love this poem. Gee it sounds hot there; I can feel it just from reading your words. Here in Oregon our furnace came on this morning because it was so chilly. But by tomorrow it is supposed to get just as hot as you describe in your poem.

  5. too hot to tango?
I am so glad I live in the UK; this seems to be the only country in the world where riots break out when the temperature goes above 25 celsius.

In fact, we haven't had rain for a couple of weeks and already there are ominous calls for hosepipe bans.
    This is a weird country!

Lovely poem, stay in and write some more.

I shall probably find the link I was looking for by working backwards from your blog.

  6. Beautifully written, Tabor. We are also horribly hot and dry here... This is the hottest summer so far that I can remember (since we moved here in 2003)--and besides all of this heat and humidity, we are also very very dry. We desperately need rain!!! George and I had to get out and water the yard/plants/flowers, etc. early this morning. Even our Rhododendron leaves are turning yellow... It's horrible!!!!

    Stay COOL..
    Hugs,
    Betsy

Yes, that is what is going on here, right now. Now our usual weather at all.

Your poem was so full of visual, I felt like I was right in the middle of it.

  8. Fun! You might have inspired me to channel this heat into poetry, but then again, maybe it's too hot!

  9. What a delightful rendition to Summer! :) Re the Lavendar---I have more luck using Rootone or some brand of rooting hormone and cuttings. I've never tried actually dividing it. If you were closer LOL I would be happy to share with you. I have some new starts growing in pots as we 'speak'. :)

  10. Splendid word picture! I may never look at a tulip tree in the same way now...

  11. What a descriptive and wonderful poem. I love it and can empathize with you on the heat you are enduring. Our afternoon temps hover around 100* F. At last, rain is predicted giving us the first humid weather of the summer.

I am now reduced to doing the rain dance in hopes those clouds forming will release some much needed moisture.

  12. Thank you thank you. I was inspired by that closeup you are using right now. Only after I blew it up did I discover how bad it looked. Made me shrink into a little ball.
